VOCs, in case you’re unfamiliar with the term, encompass a very wide variety of potentially harmful gases that are emitted by common household products such as air fresheners and disinfectants, spray cleaners and degreasing products, printer toner, cosmetics, wax, hobby products, paints, solvents and wood preservatives, to name just a few. VOCs also include pollutants produced by cigarettes, gas cooking, building materials, and even furnishings. Any or all of these could be impacting the quality of the air you breath at home, triggering or causing respiratory issues or other ailments.

RGF Environmental is a respected manufacturer with over 40 years’ experience, producing residential and commercial environmental systems that focus on providing many sectors of our society with the safest air, water and food – without the use of chemicals.

REME HALO ProductRGF also manufactures plug-in models, for areas without a ducting system – an option worth considering for homes with hot water heat, or for anyone who is still looking for the right place to settle down for a while.

Working in conjunction with your standard or high performance furnace filter, the REME HALO will immediately turn your home into a healthier, more comfortable place to live and breathe. Contact one of our estimators or service technicians to learn more about this valuable product.

Air Filters

The most common central air filters are made from a fabric or mesh, and usually range from 1–5 inches thick. Often making use of a pleated ‘V’ design, the furnace filter is normally located in the ducting next to or adjacent to the furnace.

Lennox Air Filters - Save Home HeatIn older installations, the typically 1″ furnace filter may sometimes be found in the furnace blower compartment. In some systems, the filter(s) may be found in return-air filter grilles located in a ceiling or wall.

The thinner air filters generally cost less and need to be changed more often, while the more effective, thicker filters cost more, but typically retain their effectiveness for 6 months to a year. These 5″ thick, high efficiency media air filters are very effective removing airborne dust and dust mites, pollen, and pet dander, and are also effective capturing airborne mold and a variety of common bacteria and viruses. Some of these high efficiency media filters also incorporate activated charcoal, for assistance in odor reduction.

High efficiency media filters also provide enhanced protection against clogging from dust for the indoor cooling coil in systems that have central AC, helping to maintain system efficiency and performance.

The efficiency and effectiveness of media filters is typically referred to by their MERV ratings, the higher the number the more effective the filter.  MERV stands for “Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value” within a specified particle range established by our industry engineering association, ASHRAE. Our team typically installs media filters with efficiency ratings in the MERV11 to MERV16 range.

HEPA Filters For Your Entire Home

Lennox Healthy Climate Solutions LogoAnother product that has carved a niche in the residential furnace market are true HEPA filters, whose equivalent efficiency rating is in the MERV17 range. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters initially gained a strong reputation in commercial applications such as clean rooms, and are now available for home installation. HEPA filters can be installed on an existing centrally ducted heating and cooling system, and can also be installed with independent ducting, serving all or parts of a home. This second option makes it possible to provide HEPA air filtration even for homes that are heated by a hot water boiler.

Air Filter Efficiency & Airflow Considerations

Air Filters AvailablePurchasing the most efficient furnace filter may not make the most sense for every system. Higher efficiency filters are also more restrictive to airflow. The more efficient filters, in some cases, could create potential airflow issues that  could affect adequate air delivery to rooms at the farther ends of your ducting system, and could even create adverse effects for your furnace or central air conditioner’s ability to do its job properly. For example, 1″ disposable filters with ratings as high as MERV 13 are available, but our team has found that anything rated higher than MERV 8 in that thin of a filter is very likely to create airflow issues in most residential systems.

It’s worth noting that whole-house HEPA filters, when installed correctly, have a design that essentially eliminates airflow restriction concerns for this highly efficient air cleaner.

When upgrading your existing furnace filter, care should be taken to choose a product that’s a good match for your furnace fan and the ducting system, one that allows for good airflow throughout your home. That’s where expert advice from Save Home Heat can make all the difference!

Air filter issues – neglected or ineffective – are one of the most common causes of furnace failure. One of our representatives would be glad to suggest a product to best meet your needs.
